5 Ways to stop Hair Loss for Men

Hair loss, receding hairline, and hair thinning are common complaints among men and women, especially after a given age. Both  men and women experience hair loss or thinning hair at some points in their lives. Though, after 50 hair loss becomes prominent. The quality and lustre of your hair depends upon the nutrition, workout and lifestyle you lead.

Hair grows in three different cycles: anagen, catagen, and telogen. About 90% of the hair on the head is in the anagen, or growth phase, which lasts anywhere from two to eight years. Things that interfere with the cycle: extreme weight loss, cancer treatments, certain medications and medical conditions, family history, fungal infections, iron deficiency, weakened immune system, and over styling of hair have the potential to stop hair from being formed properly.

Since a bald spot and bald patches are something that most people would like to bid adieu in their lives, here is a quick article to help you through types of hair loss, causes of hair loss and tips for non medical treatments for regrowth.

Include a protein-rich diet in your menu

The pace of modern life has rendered many unwanted habits in our everyday lives. An improper diet that lacks protein coupled with a low-workout routine is one of them. Protein is a body-building substance in true sense. It enhances hair growth, cell-repair, aids the immune system and function while regulating the hormonal cycle in our body. When you deprive your body of certain foods, it can cause nutritional deficiencies and side effects that may lead to hair loss. Research shows that a protein-rich diet (at least 5 times a week) is crucial for a healthy body. So, ditch the next bowl of that ramen and boil those eggs!

Wash your hair regularly but not everyday in some cases.

There is only a finite amount of dirt, dust & beating your hair can take in a day.  Scalp buildup can cause hair loss if left untreated and the dead skin, oil, and sweat clog your hair follicles. This can lead to an uncomfortable condition called folliculitis. Folliculitis causes inflammation of the hair follicles that sometimes results in infection. For optimum care, wash your hair as needed.. If you have an oily scalp this would be more frequently however, with a dry scalp you really want to pay attention to how it feels, sometimes over washing can dry the scalp and cause flakiness.

Massage with essential oils

This one is underrated but time-tested and highly effective. Scalp massage with oils like castor, almond, olive, coconut, sesame, etc. keeps the skin moist. Castor oil along with vitamin e oil can be applied to eyelashes. The fatty acids that make up castor oil are believed to be extremely nourishing to the skin. Many people report that with regular application, castor oil has helped them to grow thicker, longer eyelashes and eyebrows.

Scalp massage increases hair thickness by stretching the cells of the hair follicles. This stimulates the hair follicles producing thicker hair and further hair loss. More importantly, it activates the growth of new follicles and keeps the existing ones productive. For noticeable results, aim for scalp massage at least three times a week. Scalp massage also boosts the blood circulation in your head and replenish the area with healthy & active cells encouraging hair growth and new hair.

Over the counter treatments and experts

Numerous hair loss and hair regrowth products available over the counter.  Rogaine is a minoxidil solution and foam is used to help hair growth and is available over the counter as a liquid or foam to treat male baldness and female pattern baldness. It is not used for baldness at the front of the scalp or receding hairline in men. The foam and 2 percent minoxidil solution is also used to help hair growth in women with thinning hair. Hair loss never stops, but Rogaine and Finasteride, sold under the brand names Proscar and Propecia, are excellent, medically proven ways to slow down hair loss. In fact, in your battle against hair loss a comprehensive treatment plan that includes Rogaine and Propecia might be more effective than using either one alone for hair regrowth.

Biotin to the rescue

Another over the counter solution is biotin. Biotin may not only assist in hair regrowth, there is some research to suggest that increased biotin intake can improve overall hair quality, including thickness and shine.

For women oral contraceptives may be prescribed often in combination with other medications to help stop progressive hair loss in people who are having androgen-related hair loss. If hair loss runs in your family, look for supplements that contain more estrogen than progestin. These pills are low on the androgen index, and they can actually stimulate hair growth by keeping your hair in the anagen phase longer.

Why not make things simpler for yourself in the age of internet and technology?  Licensed physicians guide you through the hair loss treatment and prescribe a suitable course of medicare on a case-to-case base or consult your dermatologist. One of the most common disorders that dermatologists diagnose and treat, the medical term for hair loss is alopecia. Dermatologists can get to the root of the problem, and in many cases, successfully treat hair loss.

Hair care and styling

Brushing & combing are an essential part of hair care and styling. But, be careful! Your hair is in their weakest state when they are wet. Brushing or combing them too hard right after the shower makes them vulnerable to breakage as the follicles lose their tensile strength. Wait for your hair to be semi-dry naturally (don’t use a dryer) and then comb.  Traction alopecia is a common cause of hair loss by repeatedly pulling on your hair. You can develop this condition if you often wear your hair in a tight ponytail, bun, or braids, especially if you use chemicals or heat on your hair. Traction alopecia can be reversed if you stop pulling your hair back. But if you don’t intervene soon enough, the hair loss may be permanent.  So ditch that high ponytail, choose a loose hairstyle rather than a tight updo, avoid having hair extensions and give your hair a break from excessive styling.

Say no-no to smoking

Many smokers don’t like to hear this – But smoking does affect your health and immune system in many other serious ways. Excessive smoking can lead to thin hair followed by an accelerated hair loss. If you are really worried about your hair loss, quit smoking. Or, at least cut it significantly. Increase your workout level instead and you will thank us later.

Hair loss is not a threat to your health. But, rapid hair loss or weakening of hair might be the indicators of underlying nutritional imbalance in your body. Take preventive actions today and get in touch with the experts to learn about your options.
